Cross-Pavement Charging Provisions in Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is excited to announce the launch of an ambitious cross pavement charging scheme, enabling households without off street parking to charge their electric vehicle (EV) on street in front of their home, via a cross-pavement gully.
More than half of households in the city lack access to off-street parking, which makes switching to an EV more challenging and often significantly more expensive than households with the ability to park off-street. This subsidised scheme will make using an EV more accessible and affordable for residents without access to off street parking.
The pavement gully is a recessed channel set into the pavement that sites flush with the surface, enabling a charging cable to be safely used from a resident’s home charger unit, across the pavement, to charge an EV parked on street. This ensures the pavement remains safe, free from obstacles, and accessible to all, whilst enabling the resident to charge their vehicles on street from their domestic electricity supply.
The council is utilising four British Standard approved pavement gully suppliers; Charge Gully, Gul-e, Kerbo Charge and Pavecross.
Affordable EV Charging Access for Residents
Charging at home can be up to 10 times cheaper than charging at public charging points, so offering residents without off-street parking to charge ‘at home’ is crucial in addressing the current cost and inequity of EV ownership.
The council is committed to making this project affordable for residents. Using funding already secured through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund and the DfT, the council will subsidise 100% of the installation cost of the gully, a saving of over £1,200.
