Occupational Therapy Service

Who are we…

Social Care Occupational Therapy Services (SCOTS for short) is made up of Occupational Therapists (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA). Our service supports both adults and children.

What we do...

The role of the OT service is to support adults and children with a disability or chronic illness to access equipment and/or adaptations for their property, to enable them to manage their daily living activities.

Where someone is not eligible for support, signposting, advice and/or information will be offered.

What We Don't Do…

  • Rehousing- If you want to be rehoused to a more suitable property, you need to contact the Homeless Support Team: HomelessSupportTeam@stoke.gov.uk
  • Waiting for hospital discharge- If you are waiting to be discharged from hospital, the hospital OT is responsible for this. If you are enquiring on behalf of a friend or family member you will need to ring ward the person is on, you can then ask to speak to the hospital OT involved. You can find the ward number by contacting main contact number for the hospital.
  • Equipment required for acute medical conditions, recent hospital discharge and rehabilitation - You will need to contact your GP practice and request a referral to the NHS Community Occupational Therapy team.
  • Mobility aids – You will need to contact your GP practice and request a referral to the NHS Community Physiotherapy team.
  • Wheelchairs – You will need to contact your GP for a referral to the Wheelchair Clinic. You could also contact Wheelchair Services AJMHealthcare on 0808 175 3996 or ajm.ssotwheelchairservice@nhs.net
  • Small daily living aids – You should self-purchase these from disability shops (Amazon also provide a range of these aids). You can also use our AskSARA online tool for more information stoke.livingmadeeasy.org.uk
  • Air flow mattresses – these are provided by District Nurses whose services can be accessed by your GP.

In addition to the above points, our children’s team do not provide the following equipment.

  • Specialist car seats
  • Wheelchairs or specialist pushchairs
  • Walking/Pushchair harnesses

It is recommended that the carer/parent contacts the GP, Physiotherapist or CAHMS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service).
