Apply for benefits

Discover which benefits you can apply for, whether it's Universal Credit or local support provided by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, including Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, Discretionary Housing Payments, and Council Tax Hardship.

Universal Credit

For most people of working age, unless you currently get Housing Benefit paid by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, you will not be able to make a new Housing Benefit claim, instead you can make a new claim for Universal Credit, this is a monthly payment to help with living costs for people on a low income or out of work. It replaces several older benefits, including Housing Benefit for most new claims.

Universal Credit

Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit helps residents on a low income pay their rent if they live in a council property, privately rented accommodation or housing association properties. This benefit is gradually being replaced by Universal Credit.

Housing Benefit is only available if one of the following applies:

  • You and your partner are pension age
  • You live in supported accommodation (ask your landlord if unsure)
  • You’ve been placed in temporary accommodation

Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support provides financial help to reduce the amount of Council Tax you need to pay if you're on a low income or receiving certain benefits even if you own your own home.

Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)

Discretionary Housing Payments provide extra financial support for those already receiving Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit, but still struggling to cover their rent.

Council Tax Hardship Payment

Council Tax Hardship provides additional help for residents facing exceptional financial difficulties and unable to pay their Council Tax, even after receiving Council Tax Support.
