Stoke-on-Trent City Council is committed to improving air quality in the city. We recognise that prolonged exposure to poor air quality can cause up to 36,000 premature deaths per year.
As required by law, we have systems in place to monitor levels of air pollution across the city. Over the last five years, our Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) has achieved reduced levels of air pollution both at specific locations where action was most needed, as well as generally across the city.
We are now required to review and update our AQAP to make sure our actions will continue to have a positive impact on reducing levels of air pollution across the city.
Our AQAP is designed to align with expected actions detailed in the wider North Staffordshire Air Quality Plan, currently in development. It details a number of specific measures to complement actions in the wider plan and is focused on four key themes:
- Supporting the implementation of North Staffordshire Air Quality Plan.
- Reducing congestion at the Waterloo Road and Cobridge Road junction.
- Investing in measures that will make public transport and active travel a more attractive alternative to using a private car for short journeys around the city.
- Providing residents with opportunities to apply for a grant to improve the energy efficiencies of their homes.
We have teamed up with Ricardo to develop a draft air quality action plan- and now we want to hear from you.
More information on the measures can be found in our draft Air Quality Action Plan:
To take part in this consultation, please review the plan and complete the accompanying survey.
Your input will allow the council to understand whether the proposed updated air quality action plan has fully captured concerns from the community, and help ensure that the plan is robust enough to safeguard human and environmental health for current and future generations.
The survey includes some set questions followed by open text boxes for any further comments, and should take 5-10 minutes to complete. The deadline to complete the survey is midnight on the Sunday 17th of August.
The survey can be found at the link below:
When accessing the survey, you will leave the stoke.gov site.
All the information you provide through this survey will be used and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 (incorporating the EU's GDPR).
