Converting a civil partnership to a marriage

There are two ways to convert a civil partnership into marriage:

  • standard conversion
  • two-stage procedure

Standard conversion is a simple administrative process where both partners attend an appointment at the register office to complete a declaration.

The couple signs it to confirm they have not dissolved their civil partnership and both wish to convert their civil partnership to a marriage.

You can choose to say the declaration wording aloud to one another before signing the conversion document. We will then register the marriage and issue the marriage certificate.
Conversion of civil partnership to marriage (standard appointment, no ceremony)
Available Monday to Thursday only  £50
 For the housebound  £109
 For the detained  £129

Two-stage procedure

  • Both partners attend an appointment at the register office to complete a declaration. There is a fee charged for this appointment plus a booking fee
  • The signing of the declaration can be followed by a ceremony at any venue where couples are able to marry. Following the ceremony we will register the marriage and issue the marriage certificate.
