Tell us about a change in your household

It is important that you tell us immediately if there has been a change in your household where either:

  • Someone has turned 18 years old
  • Someone has moved in who is aged 18 or older

Any changes to the number of people in your household can affect your Council Tax bill.

Before you start

You must have your Council Tax billing reference number to hand. You can usually find this on any correspondence, bills or statements that we've sent to you. You will also need

  • The full names and contact details of the person moving into or out of your property
  • The dates they moved in or out
  • Their relationship to the property (owner, tenant etc)
  • Their previous address is moving in, or
  • Their new address if moving out

How to tell us

  1. Open Council Tax Online
  2. From the Tell us about a change in your household select:
    • Someone has moved out of my property or
    • Someone has moved into my property

What happens next?

We will review your change and may send you a revised bill.

We may also ask to see more information. For example, if the person moving into your household is disregarded from being counted for the Council Tax calculation.

Changes to exemptions and discounts

If there has been a change in your household, you could be eligible to receive an exemption or discount on your Council Tax bill. For more information, see our section on exemptions and discounts.

Changes to benefits

If you claim Council Tax Support (CTS), you may also need to tell the Benefits Service about your change in circumstances. For more information, visit Reporting a change in your situation.
