Apply for a copy of a birth certificate

  1. Apply for a copy of a birth certificate
  2. How much does it cost?

We hold records for all births in Stoke on Trent since 1837. If the birth was outside Stoke-on-Trent, contact the register office in where the birth took place or the General Register Office. Royal Stoke University Hospital is in Stoke-on-Trent.

We issue birth certificates at the time of registration.

There are two types of birth certificate: a short certificate containing only the child's name and date of birth or a full certificate containing parental details along with the child's name and date of birth.

Details from the registers can be released in the form of a certified copy certificate. This is produced at a legally-set fee.

There is an additional fee if the certificate is needed on the same day or if it is from an older register.

We can issue a certificate to anyone who is able to give us the full personal details of the person whose certificate is needed. No proof of identity is necessary.

You will need to supply us with enough information so we can find the record.

We will search indexes for a period of three years but only where accurate details are provided.
