Public Rights of Way: Protecting your land
Applications to add or change Public Rights of Way are called Definitive Map Modification Orders.
If you own land and want to protect it, you can submit a statement (ownership declaration) and a map to the Public Rights of Way team. This should:
- Show any existing Public Rights of Way on your land
- Confirm that you do not intend to allow any new public routes
Once accepted, this protects your land for 20 years.
To keep this protection in place, you must submit a new statement before the 20-year period ends. If anything has changed, your new submission should include updated details.
