Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Ross Irving said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the announcement that HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has passed away today (Friday).
“On behalf of the City of Stoke-on-Trent, our deepest condolences and prayers are with Her Majesty The Queen and the members of the Royal Family at this sad time.
“HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was a remarkable gentleman. He was a patron, president, and member of over 780 organisations, and he served as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award which he founded in 1956.”
As an expression of our sadness, the city’s flags are flying at half-mast until the day after his funeral. Given these unprecedented times, there will also be an online book of condolence, for Stoke-on-Trent residents to pay their respects and offer their condolences, on the national e-condolence book. This will be available to sign on the official website of the British Monarchy.
During the period of mourning, council meetings will include marks of respect, including the mace being draped in black and the chain of office will be worn with a black ribbon.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Abi Brown said: “It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. My thoughts are very much with the Queen and Royal Family. He has been a huge support to Her Majesty The Queen and was a well-regarded and well-loved member of the Royal Family. We will mourn his passing and pay our thanks to his dedication to the nation.”
Guidance on a national silence in memory of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will be given in due course.
