Revised opening hours for council services over Christmas and New Year

Published: Wednesday, 10th December 2025

Essential council services will continue over Christmas and New Year – with revised opening hours for services including waste, libraries and markets.

Bin collection days will change over the festive period to accommodate public holidays. Residents whose bins are due to be emptied on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day should present them on the day before the bank holiday. Bins must be presented by 6am on the revised collection day.

Household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) will remain open throughout the festive period, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Both sites will close at 3pm on Christmas Eve, Saturday 28 December, Sunday 29 December and New Year’s Eve.

Real Christmas trees can be taken to any of the city’s HWRCs for recycling once the festivities are over.

Most libraries across the city will close over the Christmas and New Year period, with some operating reduced hours between Christmas and New Year. Online library services, including eBooks and digital magazines, will remain available through the council’s website.

The city’s indoor markets will have adjusted opening hours in the run-up to Christmas. All markets will be open on Monday 23 December and Christmas Eve morning, close for Christmas Day and Boxing Day and reopen in time for New Year shopping.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader, Jane Ashworth, said: “We want to thank everyone who works hard over the festive period to keep essential services running smoothly.

“Residents can check our website or social media for the latest opening hours. We hope everyone enjoys a safe and restful Christmas and New Year.”
