Stoke-on-Trent prepares for new weekly food waste collections

Published: Monday, 17th November 2025

Households across Stoke-on-Trent are being encouraged to sign up ahead of the launch of a new weekly food waste recycling service, due to begin next spring.

The new service – offered in line with national government legislation - will make it easier for residents to recycle food waste separately, reduce the amount going into general waste and cut the city’s carbon emissions.

An online form is now open for households to register their interest, helping the council plan the rollout and make sure the service is efficient and cost-effective.

By signing up, households can let the council know they’d like to take part once collections begin. The information gathered will help shape how the service is introduced across the city and ensure it runs efficiently and cost-effectively.

Councillor Amjid Wazir OBE, cabinet member for environment, sustainability and enforcement at Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: “This is a big step forward in how we manage waste across the city. By recycling food waste, we can transform leftovers into something useful, such as energy or compost, rather than disposing of it as general waste.

“We’re asking residents to let us know if they’d like to take part, so we can make sure the rollout is delivered smoothly and efficiently across Stoke-on-Trent.”

The weekly food waste collection scheme comes into effect on Monday 30 March 2026. Further details will be shared as the scheme progresses.
