A new strategy is to be launched by the city council to help a wide range of local people to live the most independent lives possible.

The city council’s Independent Living Strategy will place a focus on choice and quality, making sure that residents receive the right support at the right time.

The strategy has been shaped by the voices of local people – including residents receiving home care, those in supported living and extra care housing, cares, community groups and the voluntary sector.

The new approach goes beyond adult social care, as it brings together housing, public health, Telecare, NHS partners and voluntary organisations.

By joining up services, the strategy aims to make independent living easier to achieve and more sustainable for the long term.

The new strategy will build on the council’s ongoing commitment to promoting independent living though its Live Life to the Max campaign. It highlights a wide range of resources and available to residents including digital tools, assistive technology and home adaptations and a curated app library. Residents can also connect with others, get advice and find support at the council’s network of 18 Community Lounges.

Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for adult social care and all age commissioning at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “We want to empower people to remain independent for as long as possible and this strategy will help us achieve this.

“We’re committed to supporting the wellbeing of all residents in Stoke-on-Trent and that means it’s important that people have a say in the decisions that shape their own lives.

“By working closely with communities and partners, we’ll ensure residents have more control and choice over their care and life chances will be improved across the city.”
