Following a mammoth clean-up operation of a known illegal dumping hot-spot Stoke-on-Trent City Council is reinforcing the ‘find and fine you’ zero-tolerance messaging.
Pyenest Street in Hanley has been plagued with illegal dumping and anti-social behaviour for years, and a little over 10 days ago cleansing and enforcement teams cleared the site of 16 tons of dumped mixed waste and installed a CCTV camera.
On Tuesday 5 December, the city council evidenced two individuals pulling up next to the clearing and emptying their vehicle of a considerable number of black bags and other items.
Working closely with Staffordshire Police and the DVLA, enforcement officers were able to identify the vehicle owner and issue a £400 fixed penalty notice.
Cllr Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability said: “We want to make it clear. We will not tolerate those who treat our streets and greenspaces as waste sites.
“We spent 100 days that were heavily focussed on cleaning up the city, educating residents, and putting in additional support for residents at kerbside and a later opening day at Hanford Household Waste Recycling Centre.
“We see no excuse for this type of behaviour, and now hope CCTV in hotspot areas, increased visible enforcement officers and the risk of prosecution will steer these people towards the legal ways of disposing of waste.”
Over 900 fixed penalty notices have been issued for environmental crimes, since Tuesday 20 June. For the month of November, the city council cleared 557 incidents of illegal dumping in our towns and issued 145 fixed penalty notices.
The council remains clear with its messaging to anyone illegal dumping in our towns, it will not be tolerated and action will be taken against those who do.
Inspector Hayley Eaton, of the Stoke North local policing team (LPT), said: “We are committed to tackling community concerns by working closely with partner agencies to address anti-social behaviour, including fly-tipping, across Stoke-on-Trent.
“It’s key that we continue to share information and work collectively to tackle persistent issues which matter most to residents, businesses and visitors in Stoke-on-Trent.”
