Hanford tip to open in the evening to improve access to facilities for residents

Published: Tuesday, 19th September 2023

Opening times at council run tips in the city will change this autumn, and will for the first time allow residents to dispose of waste in the evening, outside of normal working hours.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council will be operating revised opening hours at both of its tip sites, at Hanford Household Waste and Recycling Centre and at Burslem Household Waste Recycling Centre, from Sunday 1 October.

The changes will incorporate a new, later open and closing day every Thursday at Hanford-only. This will mean later opening at 11:30am and closing at 6:30pm. The later opening hours will allow people to discard of rubbish later in the day, and outside of typical working hours.

Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for environment and enforcement, said: “We’ve had a lot of queries from residents about being able to take their rubbish to the tip later in the day, and so these changes are in response to listening to local people and making the site open at a time that is convenient to them.”

There will also be changes to the opening times of Burslem Household Waste Recycling Centre. From 1 October, this site, at Federation Road, will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which brings it in line with the Hanford site which is also closed on these days. However, the Burslem site will now no longer be closed on Thursdays, and will open for a full day each Thursday between 9am-4pm. Bank Holiday Monday opening times will be confirmed closer to each date.

Councillor Wazir added: “We know that having both sites closed on Mondays and Tuesdays will inconvenience some visitors to the tips. But we also know that Mondays and Tuesdays are the quietest days of the week for visitors because we get a lot of visits over the weekend. By opening Burslem tip for a full day each Thursday and having evening openings at Hanford on a Thursday too, we hope to be able to give visitors more choice at times that suit them better. It also means that we are using our sites better, so that they are not open when demand is low, which is a more practical and sensible way of using taxpayer’s money.”

In addition to the changes, the council will offer free disposal of some household DIY waste at the tip sites to residents of Stoke-on-Trent-only. Where possible, residents are asked to check details of what items they can bring in advance of going to the tips, by visiting www.stoke.gov.uk/thetip. Alternatively, a member of our friendly site staff will be able to assist any queries.
