Apprenticeships at Stoke-on-Trent City Council
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is proud to champion apprenticeships, both within our own workforce and across the city. Since the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy in April 2017, we’ve created hundreds of opportunities and supported local businesses to do the same.
Our impact since 2017:
- 740 apprenticeships started by council employees – including new recruits and existing staff – across a wide range of roles, from Gas Plumbers to Town Planners, Social Workers to School Chefs.
- Shared our Apprenticeship Levy with local employers such as IAE, KMF, Lucideon and residential care homes, helping them create valuable apprenticeship opportunities in the community.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship combines on-the-job experience with formal training, giving you the skills, knowledge, and qualifications to progress in your career. Learning takes place through:
- Practical experience in the workplace
- Off-the-job training (online, in person, or blended)
- Support from colleges, universities, and training providers
The council funds apprenticeship training through the Apprenticeship Levy, working with trusted local, regional, and national providers.
Who can apply?
Apprenticeships are open to everyone – at any age. While they were once limited to 16–24-year-olds, that’s no longer the case. Whether you’re starting your career, changing direction, or looking to upskill, an apprenticeship is a great way to develop and keep your skills relevant.
