A crisis it is not planned and therefore the approach of crisis intervention and mediation needs to be flexible and helpful to the family, whilst being mindful of the emotional impact on staff. Crisis intervention seeks to offer social work staff an evidenced base approach to crisis in families, from staff trained in the nature of relationships, understanding professional boundaries, exploring responses and working with different points of view. While being outcome focussed and being able to explore change, identify barriers/resistance to change with the ability to plan for endings and exit from family life. During this process mediation may offered and is in its broadest sense a structured process to engage all parties to acknowledge difficulties and begin to explore possibilities of reaching an agreement or way forward. The ultimate goal is to avoid escalation and lessen trauma whilst remaining child focussed throughout any intervention ensuring the child's safety and welfare is paramount. This training would also help staff Identify ethical dilemma in the work, coping with personal feelings and personal impact. Alongside the skills necessary to appropriately challenge in a non-confrontational way.
