TitleIntroduction to Five Ways to Wellbeing Health Improvement Sessions
Contract Reference NumberPH/2016/184
InformationQuotations are invited for the appointment of a suitable provider to work with Public Health to develop and deliver “an introduction to the five ways to wellbeing”; a short asset based health improvement session for parents/carers of Young People in Stoke-on-Trent. Wellbeing can be described as feeling good and functioning well and a whole range of factors can contribute to an individual's sense of wellbeing. Low levels of wellbeing can be associated with a wide range of social and personal problems including depression and poor mental health, loneliness and involvement in risk taking behaviours. There is evidence that supporting families and carers, building resilience through to adulthood and supporting self-care can reduce the burden of mental and physical ill health over the whole life-course. Evidence also shows that there are 5 key actions that we can take to improve wellbeing; the five ways to wellbeing. From previous consultations with young people we know that they view parents/carers as important sources of health and wellbeing information. Follow up consultations with parents/carers found that they may feel unconfident about how to start conversations, may be worried that their children know more than they do or think that they just don't know enough about health topics to talk comfortably about them with their children. Therefore increasing parents and carers awareness of the behaviours that promote good mental wellbeing and how they can support the young people they care for to adopt and maintain these behaviours can play a key role in improving mental wellbeing for both their young people and in turn themselves. This awareness session, will be part of a programme of 'Light-bite' health improvement sessions for parents/carers of teenagers. It will use an asset based approach to give them an introduction to how the five ways to wellbeing can help to support good mental wellbeing both for the young people they care for and in turn themselves. The session should enable parents/carers to: • Gain awareness and understanding about what positive mental wellbeing is and how the Five Ways to Wellbeing can positively impact on their own and their children's mental health and wellbeing • Help parents/carers feel better informed and more confident to support their children to take action to look after their mental health and wellbeing • Know where they can go for further information, advice and support both for themselves and for the young people that they care for. • Provide parents/carers with some supporting resources on the Five Ways to Wellbeing and further information, advice and support.
