Tributes paid to late former Lord Mayor Sybil Halfpenny

Published: Friday, 18th December 2020

Tributes have been paid to late city councillor and former Lord Mayor, Sybil Halfpenny.

Sybil was first elected to Stoke-on-Trent City council in 1976 and was a dedicated councillor and community champion for over 30 years. She represented the former East Valley ward and was named as Lord Mayor in 1990, dedicating her time in office to helping animal charities. Her son, Paul Halfpenny remembers her as spending hours helping residents and said: “She was a very honest and generous person. The main thing she wanted to do in life was help other people out. Everyone said how much they loved and respected her.”

Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor, Ross Irving remembers being present in Germany when Sybil, as Lord Mayor, signed the agreement twinning Stoke-on-Trent with Erlangen. Paying tribute, the Lord Mayor said: “I knew Sybil Halfpenny very well and admired her greatly. She was a very well-respected member of the Labour party and, although we didn’t always see eye-to-eye politically, I liked her as a person and thought she did a fantastic job for her constituents. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
