Burslem and Hanley parks retain prestigious Green Flag Awards

Burslem Park and Hanley Park have once again been awarded Green Flag status, recognising them as being among the best parks and green spaces in the country.

The awards recognise the high standards of management, maintenance and visitor experience, reflecting the dedication of the council’s parks teams and volunteers who work throughout the year to keep the parks safe, welcoming and well cared for.

Both parks are Grade II* listed Victorian parks recognised for their historic significance and for bringing vital green space to their local communities. Hanley Park has benefited from extensive restoration in recent years, including the refurbishment of its boathouse, formal terrace gardens and pavilion through National Lottery Heritage Fund investment. Burslem Park, opened in 1894, remains one of the country’s best-preserved Victorian parks.

The internationally recognised Green Flag Award celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, with a record-breaking 2,391 parks and green spaces across the UK receiving the accolade.

Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for environment and enforcement at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see both Hanley Park and Burslem Park once again recognised with Green Flag Awards.

“These parks are at the heart of their communities, providing places for people to relax, exercise, play sport and spend time with family and friends.

“This award reflects the hard work and commitment of our parks teams, volunteers and community groups, whose dedication helps keep these much-loved green spaces looking their best all year round.”

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

“Stoke-on-Trent City Council has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like these that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. It recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for green space management across the UK and around the world.
