Children and young people with disabilities across Stoke-on-Trent are enjoying thousands of opportunities for day trips and breaks each year.
The city council commissions the popular short break activities to give young people with complex needs, who would otherwise not have a break, the chance to have fun, make friends and relax.
One user of the Short Breaks service said: “Only positive feedback from us, extremely good service and the staff are lovely. I am trying hard to think of any improvements that could be made but I can’t. As I said before, we only had a positive experience with them.”
The service, which has been funded by the city council since 2019, also offers much-needed respite to carers who may not get a break from their caring duties. More than 500 activities were organised between October 2022 and September 2023, offering more than 4,500 spaces to children and young people.
Now the city council is looking to extend the service into March next year in the hope many more young people will benefit.
The news comes as the city council is growing its Family Matters offer, providing key opportunities for families across the city and strengthening partnerships to enhance family life in Stoke-on-Trent, with better co-ordination and targeted delivery.
Councillor Sarah Hill, cabinet member for children’s services said: “This is a brilliant initiative that helps keeps families together as part of the Family Matters campaign we’re running to give families all the opportunities they need to thrive.
“We’re committed to improving family life in the city, keeping children safely with their families where they can best thrive and grow. Short Breaks services give young people with disabilities the fun experiences that every child deserves as well as being a really important lifeline for them and their families.”
