New Parade Marshal arrangements to be unveiled as Geoff Harriman thanked for 40 years’ service

New Parade Marshal arrangements will be in place for this year’s Remembrance Service in Stoke-on-Trent, following the retirement of Geoff Harriman after more than 40 years of service.

The role is responsible for helping to plan key commemorative events in the city and supervising the activities of standard bearers. Mr Harriman had carried out the role on a voluntary capacity, supporting Stoke-on-Trent City Council with the smooth running of Remembrance Services and celebrations including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the city’s marking of the accession of King Charles III.

New arrangements will see the British Army D Company 4th Battalion The Mercian Regiment take on Parade Marshal duties for the city’s Remembrance Service on 12 November.

Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Majid Khan said: “Mr Harriman has been instrumental in supporting the planning, organisation and smooth running of the Remembrance Service held at the Cenotaph in Stoke for more than 40 years.

“On behalf of the city, I’d like to thank Mr Harriman for his dedication. We are extremely grateful for his commitment year-on-year and the contribution he has made.”

Stoke-on-Trent Armed Forces Champion, councillor Desiree Elliott, added: “This is an important role for our city. It has a key part to play in how Stoke-on-Trent comes together to mark national remembrances, bringing our armed services together and enabling residents to commemorate the occasion appropriately.

“We welcome the role that 4th Battalion The Mercian Regiment will play in supporting this work for the future, with the regiment providing reservists to take on Parade Marshal responsibilities.”
