Students launch Christmas at Smithfield

Students from Newfriars College, Bucknall will be launching Christmas at Smithfield this Friday, December 2. The students will switch on the Christmas lights in the public area of Smithfield, which will in turn light up the new multi-storey car park.

The Christmas fun doesn’t stop there! This Sunday, Smithfield will be hosting a Christmas market between 12 and 4pm, with local makers selling homemade gifts. You will also get the chance to see reindeer, Father Christmas, and enjoy some mulled wine with Carol Singers.

Newfriars College focuses on transforming the lives of young people with special needs through collaboration, innovation, partnership, and celebration.

A spokesperson from Newfriars College said: “This is an incredible opportunity and an honour for our students to showcase the professional development they have learned this academic term and a celebration as we head into the Christmas break.

“Getting out and about is part of everyday life at the College. This will give our students the chance to become more confident and to learn what facilities are available in the community”

The visit will give each student the chance to use their voice/communication devices, make choices, learn to use money and to be more confident using public transport, learn about facilities in the community and see the city from all aspects.

The 730-space facility has been built off Potteries Way in Hanley as part of the wider Smithfield development which already boasts the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and Clayworks apartments.

The multi-storey will open to vehicles for the first time on Monday, December 5 as the Christmas shopping period gets underway in the city centre.
