Exciting Volunteering opportunities at Stoke-on-Trent Libraries

Published: Tuesday, 6th September 2022

Stoke-on-Trent libraries have a number of exciting volunteering opportunities available in their six libraries, including the newly reopened Tunstall Library, and other community venues

The two main roles available will be Digital Champions and Reading Friends.

The Digital Champion role includes –

Bridging the gap between getting started and becoming a confident user of digital devices. Working with people on a one-to-one basis in libraries you will help promote library online services such as eBooks, audiobooks, and e-magazines.

The Reading Friend role includes –

Supporting communities to connect and support people looking to meet new people. This is a network of non-traditional reading groups, meeting either online, in the libraries, or in another community space.

Interested parties can enquire about the roles in all of the libraries sites across the city, including Tunstall, Meir, Longton, City Central, Bentilee, and Stoke.

Cllr Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for culture, leisure, and public health said:

“Volunteering in our libraries is a fantastic way to give back to the community and share vital life skills with our members.

“The Digital Champion role will help those less confident with technology to become more competent and the Reading Friend role is a great way to meet new people in a friendly and welcoming environment.”

A jam-packed week of activity is also planned to celebrate the opening of Tunstall Library, which will include a drop-in for prospective volunteers throughout the week.

The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday 7 Sept – Digital Learning sessions from 2pm-3:30pm with the opportunity to quiz staff on the Digital Champion volunteer role

Friday 9 Sept – Reading Group session at 2 pm with the opportunity to find out more about volunteering.

Saturday 10 Sept – Story and Craft sessions from 10:30am-11:30am plus Lego Club from midday until 1pm
