Titanic: Honour & Glory, a brand-new exhibition exploring the legacy of the world’s most famous ship is heading to The Potteries Museum & Arts Gallery.
Titanic: Honour & Glory, a brand-new exhibition exploring the legacy of the world’s most famous ship and includes genuine artefacts from the Titanic and her sister ships and memorabilia from the 1997 James Cameron movie, is heading to The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery from Saturday 19 February until 1 May 2022.
The exhibition will also feature the accounts of local Staffordshire personnel connected to the ill-fated liner including Captain Edward John Smith, Mr Leonard Hodgkinson, Senior 4th Engineer on board Titanic, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent and Mr. Christopher Mills, assistant butcher who was born in Longton.
Stoke-on-Trent also has another connection to the Titanic with side plates produced by pottery company WM Brownfield used on-board in the 1st class dining room.
Highlights include:
• Some of the beautiful china dinner plates upon which the first meals were served aboard Titanic
• Personal belongings of Titanic’s passengers and crew, including a night dress which belonged to first class passenger Margaret Welles Baron Swift on board Titanic
• A nameplate from one of Titanic’s lifeboats
• Rare examples of in memoriam tributes made in the aftermath of the sinking, including Titanic relief fund cheques, which were given to support the families of those who were lost
• Glimpses of the liner’s sumptuous interior and the luxury passengers enjoyed aboard a White Star liner through rare examples from her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic
• A selection of props from the film Titanic including some of the dresses worn by Kate Winslet and the dazzling ‘heart of the ocean’ necklace.
Councillor Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for leisure, culture and public health said:
“People from around the globe are fascinated by the story of the Titanic which was propelled back into the limelight following the release of the movie in 1997, but residents here in the city have a connection in more ways than one to the ill-fated liner, and so I’m overjoyed to have this exhibition coming to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
“The exhibition will really bring home the scale of the disaster and narrates some incredibly powerful stories from those involved.
“Residents will get the opportunity to view some fantastic pieces as part of the exhibition including props from the Oscar winning film, this exhibition is not to be missed and we look forward to welcoming visitors from across the city and further afield.”
Voted one of the top five exhibitions in the United Kingdom by The Times, Titanic: Honour & Glory will explore her story, and those of her sister ships and their owners, the White Star Line, as well as revealing the local links of some of its passengers.
Titanic: Honour & Glory gathers together an unrivalled collection of genuine and rare artefacts from the Titanic and her sister ships.
The Titanic: Honour & Glory exhibition starts at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery from Saturday 19 February until 1 May 2022.
Tickets are £5, Concessions £3, Friends of the Museum and under 16’s free.
