Starting from Monday 30 March 2026, we’re launching a new weekly food waste recycling service to help reduce waste and protect the environment.
We’ll deliver everything you need to get started, including:
- A small silver coloured kitchen caddy (7 litres) for collecting food waste indoors.
- A roll of liners to use in your kitchen caddy (You don’t need to use our bin liners — all food waste is removed before processing)
- A larger outdoor food waste bin (colour-coded) (23 litres) for collection by our crews.
About collections
Your food waste will be collected every week, starting the week of Monday 30 March 2026, on the same day as your usual waste and recycling.
Using this weekly service means food waste won’t sit in your bin for long. The outdoor bins have a secure lid to keep out pests and smells.
How to register for food waste collections
COMING SOON - you will be able to register your interest here if you’d like to receive a food caddy.
How do I use the food waste caddy?
- Use the liners in your silver coloured kitchen caddy to collect food waste.
- When full, tie the liner and place it in your outdoor caddy.
- Put your outdoor caddy out on collection day with your other bins.
If you live in a flat, you’ll use a shared communal bin instead of an individual outdoor caddy.
What items can go into the caddy?
Yes please:
- Leftover food and plate scrapings
- Out-of-date or mouldy food
- Meat and fish (raw or cooked, including bones)
- Dairy (e.g. eggs, eggshells, cheese)
- Fruit and vegetables (raw or cooked)
- Bread, cakes, pasta, rice
- Beans
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
No thanks:
- Packaging of any kind
- Liquids (milk, oil, fat)
- Anything that’s not food waste
What happens to my food waste?
Your food waste is taken to a local anaerobic digestion plant, where it’s turned into:
- Biogas – a clean energy source
- Fertiliser – used in farming
Why does recycling my food waste matter?
Using the food waste service helps:
- Save money for the council by reducing disposal costs
- Free up funds for services like social care, education, and leisure
- Reduce food waste at home, helping you save money on shopping - When people start separating their food waste, they often realise just how much they’re throwing away — which can lead to buying less and wasting less.
