What items do we charge to dispose of?

Information about the charges for DIY waste at our recycling centres

On 18 June 2023, the Government announced their intention to abolish charges on small amounts of DIY waste brought to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) later this year.

DIY waste is clearly defined as follows:

  • The waste is produced by householders whilst carrying out small-scale construction or demolition works at their home.
  • The waste does not arise from activities that generate an income for the person who carried them out.
  • The waste is not produced on a regular basis requiring HWRC visits more frequently than four times per household over a four-week period. And:
  • The quantity of waste per visit is no greater than two 50L rubble bags or 1 bulky or fitted item no larger than 2000mm x 750mm x700mm, such as a bathtub.
  • If these parameters are not met, the waste is considered construction waste and therefore subject to charges.

Whilst we are still awaiting further information and guidance of when this will commence, Stoke-on-Trent City Council will immediately adopt the above approach for residents only at each of its HWRC sites at Hanford and Burslem. Please have evidence of residency available when you visit the HWRC sites, current charges will remain in place for non-residents and those unable to prove their address.

Please note the Government’s announcement did not abolish all charges but set a minimum level to be accepted for free, larger amounts will still be charged for.

At present the Government have indicated that the amount of waste accepted for free will be as follows:

  • the quantity of waste per visit is no greater than two 50L rubble bags or 1 bulky or fitted item no larger than 2000mm x 750mm x700mm, such as a bathtub.
  • In addition, the waste is not produced on a regular basis requiring HWRC visits more frequently than four times per household over a four-week period.

We charge to get rid of some items at our tips. Payment by debit card only.
