How we use your data

When you use the markets service we collect relevant information about you.  We only keep this data for the time specified in our retention schedule or as required by law.

Market traders: we collect your name, contact details, proof of identity, proof of right to work in the UK, financial details, date of birth and National Insurance Number and we use this data to contact you about:

  • your contract with us
  • to keep you updated with relevant market news
  • contact you in emergency out of hours regarding your business ie in the event of a power cut which could damage your stock
  • to process financial transactions
  • provide relevant parties the details we hold on you as required by law

We have a duty to protect public funds. We may therefore use the information we have for the prevention and detection of fraud. We may share this information with other bodies for these purposes. We may share this information with relevant organisations for purposes which may include enforcement.

We may share data with our internal audit team to evaluate the effectiveness of the organisation’s risk management, control and governance processes.  We may also share your data with the council's fraud team to help to prevent and detect fraud.

We are able to do this because you have entered into a contract with us and we can’t fulfil it without doing this.

Specialist market traders: we collect your contact details and details about your business and what you sell. We do this to inform you of upcoming events you may wish to trade at, to contact you about your bookings or to provide relevant parties the details we hold on you as required by law because you have asked us to do so. If you have traded at an event you are a market trader but we will only collect the relevant information from the above list.

Market customers: we collect your contact details to inform you of promotional activities if you have requested we do so, to send you any competition prizes you win and in response to any correspondence you send us. We do this because you have asked us to do so. We will not pass your details on to anyone else. You can request to be removed from the list.
