Councillor Mohammed Pervez resignation

Councillor Mohammed Pervez has resigned today (Monday) as a Stoke-on-Trent City councillor.

Councillor Pervez said “I have now been a city councillor for 14 years and over this period I have worked around the clock to support my constituents and the residents of Stoke-on-Trent.  

“During this lockdown period I have reflected on my work-life balance and have decided to step down as a councillor to focus more on my daytime job and family.  

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the years.”

Councillor Pervez was first elected to the Burslem South ward in 2006, he was deputy elected Mayor in 2008-2009, and leader of the council between 2010 and 2015, and subsequently leader of the opposition.

Concillor Pervez represented Moorcroft Ward and was currently leader of the Labour Group and chair of Corporate Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Councillor Paul Shotton – deputy leader of the Labour Group will take over as leader of the Labour Group.

A vacancy notice will be published and if requested by two electors a by-election will be held. Normally a by-election would occur within 35 days, however in accordance with the Coronavirus Act 2020 and regulations issued by the Secretary of State a by-election would not be held until 6 May 2021.
