The building of new affordable housing has begun on a site that has been derelict for more than 10 years.
Land off Norfolk Street in Shelton is being brought back into use after being cleared by Stoke-on-Trent City Council as part of its commitment to provide quality housing for people at all stages of life.
In total, 20 one-bedroom apartments and eight family houses will be built.
Councillor Joanne Powell-Beckett, the city council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “It’s fantastic news that we will very soon see this development taking shape.
“Bringing vacant sites back into use shows that the city is growing and that development potential is being realised.”
Norfolk Street is located close to the Pyenest Street Housing Zone site in the Hanley Park and Shelton ward of the city, ground condition surveys are due to start at the end of the month at the Pyenest site.
The Norfolk Street development site has been vacant for a number of years and is close to residential properties as well as being next to Shelton Primary Care Centre.
Work has now started on site and the first residents will be able to move into their new homes – which will be let in accordance with the council’s housing allocation policy – in winter next year.
The £3 million scheme will be funded by a combination of Right to Buy receipts and funds from the city council’s housing revenue account.
Cllr Joanne Powell-Beckett added: “There is a clear need for one-bedroom apartments and three or four-bedroom houses in the Hanley Park and Shelton areas and this scheme will help to meet this need.”
