£1.8m refurbishment proposals revealed for Hanley Market at traders’ consultation event before works begin

Traders have welcomed plans by Stoke-on-Trent City Council to spend £1.8 million on refurbishing and improving their market.

Stallholders at Hanley Market have this week been shown images of what the venue will look like once the work has been carried out, and been given the chance to find out more about the proposals. The revamp, set to start before the end of the year, will see improvements to the public toilets, market stalls refurbished, lighting improved and the ceiling grid removed.

Trader Lorraine Stubbs, from The Living Room, said: “My stall has been moved towards the front of the market into one of the newly refurbished stalls in preparation for the work taking place. My stall is doing really well and I think that the new space has definitely helped.

“I’ve been here for twelve years and am looking forward to seeing the final results once the work has been completed. There are a lot of brilliant ideas to refresh the market and any investment into it can only be a good thing.”

Trader Michelle Plant, from Nails With Attitude, said: “The plans look amazing. The colours are much fresher and cleaner, and it’s great that the toilets are going to be upgraded. I believe these changes are needed to attract younger people.”

The aim of the renovations it to create an environment where traders want to operate and customers want to shop, ensuring that the market continues to be the home of successful independent businesses.

The works to enable the renovations to take place have already begun, with the first phase planned to start before the Christmas period. The opening times and the daily operations of the market will not be affected.

Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, transport and heritage, said: “We have been working hard for a long time to ensure that the proposals for the refurbishment work of Hanley Market are to the highest standards and will significantly improve the space and experience for both customers and traders.

“Hanley Market is a staple part of the city centre and we are determined to breathe new life into it for the benefit of the city. We are always looking for new and aspiring entrepreneurs to come and join our markets, and we hope that investing in these renovations will encourage them to come forward and see what Hanley Market has to offer.

“We are committed to ensuring that all of our market traders across the city are given the environment for their businesses to thrive.”

The plans and artist’s impressions will be on display in the market for the public to view from Wednesday, November 7 until Sunday, November 11.
