Residents who have not yet responded to the annual election canvass are being advised that they will be visited by elections office officials now.
More than 65,000 residents have already responded to the annual canvass, by returning the household enquiry forms posted out by Stoke-on-Trent City Council in July, or texting, calling or going online to complete the process.
The response means that around 56 per cent of the electorate in the city has already completed the registration process – a much higher number than in previous years.
But it still means that responses are needed from 51,500 households.
Assistant director for governance Gerry Clarke said: “We’ve had a really positive response from households to the initial stage of the canvass, with more and more people simply texting, calling or going online to complete their details. It is the quickest and easiest way to register and only takes a matter of minutes. It is also the cheapest way to register as it reduces the number of forms that need to be produced, saves the election’s office time and means we are spending less taxpayers’ money in chasing non-responders.
“We now have a team of canvassers who will be going out to the addresses of people who haven’t responded. They will be knocking on doors to help residents to respond, and if there is no response, will visit again or ring households.
“We strongly urge people to respond to the canvass as soon as possible. If you are not registered, you will not be able to vote.”
The register of electors is published on 1 December 2018. In May next year there will be all-out elections in Stoke-on-Trent, with all 44 seats on the authority contested.
Residents can make sure they are registered to vote by:
- Logging on to www.householdresponse.com/stokeontrent.
- Calling 0800 1979871 and when promoted enter part one and part two of the security code on the household enquiry form.
- Text NO CHANGE followed by the security codes to 80212.
