City Songbirds to fly high at Victoria Hall

Published: Wednesday, 20th June 2018

Tickets are on sale for a series of concerts which will showcase some of the best young musicians in Stoke-on-Trent.

Stoke-on-Trent City Music Service is presenting City Songbirds ‘We are the Champions’ at Hanley’s Victoria Hall on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 2 to 4.

The City Songbirds will share the stage over the three evenings (6.45pm) with some of the music service’s talented ensembles: The City Youth Brass Band and Brass Ensemble on Monday, The City Youth String Orchestra and Belles and Crooks (Bassoon Ensemble) on Tuesday and The City Youth Wind Orchestra, Flute Choir and Clarinuts on Wednesday. The Monday concert will also feature the senior winner of the Stoke-on-Trent Young Musician of the Year 2018 and the Wednesday concert will feature the junior winner.

This year the Songbirds will take a sporty note and will include football themed songs to tie in with the World Cup in Russia.

Cllr Janine Bridges, cabinet member for education and economy, said: “The City Music Service does a fantastic job all year round and these concerts are a great way of bringing everyone together and celebrating its achievements. They’re always very popular not just with the children who take part but also their relatives who get to watch them perform on stage in a fantastic venue. It’s a very proud moment for everyone involved.”

City Songbirds, delivered by the city council-run City Music Service, was established in 2002 to give youngsters the chance to learn songs and musical skills in a fun environment, develop confidence and team-building skills and to perform together at public concerts. Songbirds progress to the Training Choir, which caters for seven to 11-year-olds, and the City Youth Choir which promotes singing for 11 to 19-year-olds. The music service works with more than 8,000 young people in schools across the city and is based at The Bridge Centre, Birches Head.

Tickets for the concert cost £6.50 for adults, £5 for children, and £18 for a family ticket for two adults and two children. To book, call the box office on 0844 871 7649 or visit
