Take on the challenge of the Potters ‘Arf Marathon

Published: Thursday, 12th January 2023

If your New Year’s Resolution is to get fitter, the Hanley Economic Potters ‘Arf Marathon is now open for entries.

The iconic half marathon returns on Sunday 11 June 2023, with five different options for people of all abilities to take part.

For the seasoned runners, you can run the 13.1 mile course, including the notorious ‘Heartbreak Hill’. Walkers can walk the entire route or team up with three other walkers and complete a walking relay of the course.

For businesses and groups, we have the option of the relay, for up to four members which is a great team-building exercise.

Junior runners aged between 5 and 11 can take part in the 1km course through the city centre with runners between 12 and 16 having the option of a 2km course.

The chosen charities for this year’s Potters ‘Arf Marathon are Dougie Mac Hospice, UHNM Charity and Alice Charity.

Cllr Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for culture, leisure and public health said:

“The Potters ‘Arf is one of the toughest runs available across the country. It is known among runners as one of the most difficult runs, including the notorious ‘Heartbreak Hill’ but we also receive stunning support right across the course from the people of Stoke-on-Trent.

“For 2023, we are also adding the option of a walking relay to make the event even more inclusive.”

David Lownds, Head of Sales, Marketing & Business Development at Hanley Economic Building Society said:

“We’re delighted once again to be the main sponsors of the iconic Potters ‘Arf. Supporting the local community is one of our main business priorities and we look forward to another successful event in June 2023”

Ben Mills, CEO at BeeActive said:

"Bee Active are committed to helping every child in Stoke-on-Trent to lead healthy and active lives. We are delighted to be leading the junior race once again for the Potters ‘Arf 2023.”

Lisa Thomson – Director of Communications and Charity at UHNM Charity said:

“We are thrilled again to be taking an active role in the great Potters Arf.  Last year over 20 people ran and walked to raise money for UHNM Charity and as one of this year’s chosen charities, we hope that more will take to the tarmac and help raise much-needed funds to bring the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment to our hospitals.  If you want to find out more about the support and training advice available from our resident experts get in touch at www.uhnmcharity.org.uk

Donna Adams, Head of Fundraising at Dougie Mac Hospice said:

“The Potters ‘Arf is one of the highlights of the local running calendar and Dougie Mac is always so grateful for any support from the local running community. The hospice will be celebrating 50 years of care in 2023, so we’re hoping that the Potters ‘Arf will be another big success and lots of runners, and walkers, will support us in our 50th Birthday year.”
