Pedestrian Crossings

Pedestrian crossings are provided to enable the public to cross the road safely at locations where there is a high pedestrian crossing rate and the road is very heavily used.

What types of pedestrian crossings are there ?

There a currently four types of pedestrian crossing;

  • Toucan Crossing
    A crossing point controlled by traffic signals which allow both cyclists/pedestrians to cross with varying crossing times.
  • Puffin Crossing
    A crossing point controlled with traffic signals which allow pedestrians to cross with varying crossing times.
  • Pelican Crossing
    A crossing point controlled by traffic signals which allow pedestrians to cross with a fixed crossing time.
  • Zebra Crossing
    A crossing point without traffic signals.

How do I request a pedestrian crossing ?

Contact us with your request in writing. This could be a letter or a petition.  Send it to the address or email address below, stating the location where you think there is a need for a crossing point.

What we do with crossing requests

We will arrange to carry out a survey of the location you stated in your request between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm. This will assess, amongst other factors, the number of pedestrians wanting to cross the road and the number of vehicles using it.

Please note that surveys will not be carried out during school holidays as this would not give a true figure of the number of pedestrians during a normal day.

We will notify you of our findings following an assessment of the survey results.
