What do I need for a  suitability test?

If you wish to use a vehicle as a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle within Stoke-on-Trent, we will have to check and certify that it is suitable for use before you apply for a licence from our Consumer Protection Department. Suitability tests are carried out by out transport workshops in Cromer Road, Northwood.

To get the suitability test you will need:

  • An appointment with us - see below.
  • A suitable car with a minimum of five doors.
  • First Aid kit suitable for one to ten individuals.
  • Fire extinguisher 1kg.
  • Old suitability certificate if valid.
  • Fixed approved company door sign. Magnetic company door signs are not allowed unless approval has been given by our Consumer Protection Department.
  • Should the vehicle fail and require a re-test, this is free if the re-test can be completed within 24 hours, after this time a fee is payable. An appointment is required for a re-test.
  • If the vehicle is used for private use a Ministry MOT certificate is also needed. This can, carried out at the same time as the suitability test for an additional cost, please see list of charges.

What to do next
