TravelWise Campaign

Travelwise Logo

TravelWise is a national travel awareness campaign that has been adopted by over 110 local authorities in the UK including Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The aim of the campaign is to try reduce our dependence on the car and to raise the public awareness of transport issues.

Why is there a need for this campaign?

Problems caused by road congestion touch us all, everyday. Inefficient transport handicaps business, as employees and products waste time in traffic jams, whilst employers waste space and resources on car parks. The situation will be made worse as road traffic volumes are predicted to increase by a further 20% in the next 20 years. New roads only temporarily relieve congestion and always generate new traffic.

Did you know that.....?

  • 38% of all journeys made by the residents of Stoke-on-Trent are less than 2 miles in distance; and

  • 42% of Stoke-on-Trent school children under the age of 11 are driven to school.

Four ways on how you can become TravelWise

1. Use the bus or train

  • Modern buses and trains are far cleaner and more comfortable than they used to be.

  • Regular bus services cover virtually all of Stoke-on-Trent and the city is served by local and inter-regional rail services.

  • More and more buses have specially designed low-floors to make access easier for the elderly, the infirm, disabled people and people with pushchairs.

2. Walk or use that bike

  • Increases fitness through controlling weight and improving strength, stamina, aerobic fitness and general muscle function.

  • Reduces stress through exercise and the pleasure of walking and cycling.

  • Cycling and walking to work will benefit your pocket as well as your health.

3. Car share

Eight out of ten cars on our roads carry only the driver. This is very wasteful of the car and the road space. Car sharing can help to:

  • save on energy;

  • reduce your costs; and

  • reduce traffic congestion.

We recognise that, for many people, the car is the easiest choice. We also believe that car sharing is a real option for many commuters. Follow this link to find out more about car sharing.

4. Or try motorcycling

Motorcycles or Powered Two Wheelers (PTW's), which includes mopeds and scooters as well, have many advantages.

  • They take up less road space and can make progress in the heaviest traffic by filtering past queues of standing vehicles.

  • Most PTW's produce much lower levels of pollution than cars and are also much more fuel efficient.

  • PTW's need less parking space and can use small and irregular spaces making better use of existing parking areas.

  • Smaller commuter type PTW's are cheaper to buy than cars with much cheaper road tax.
