School Travel Census

School travel census results

What is the school travel census?
It is a survey of school children to find out how they travel to and from school.

It is very simple to carry out - the children are asked for a show of hands for each method of travelling to and from school on a typical day.

Why have a census?
There is increasing concern about school gate congestion and the knock-on environmental, health and safety implications.

Each school in Stoke-on-Trent is asked to take part in the Journey to School Travel Census. The results will help us to monitor trends in school travel in the city.

When does it happen?
The census is carried out once year, usually in November.

How do schools benefit?
Every year schools that take part in the census will receive information showing the comparisons of travel methods between the schools.  We can provide a more detailed report for each school on request. Schools can use this information to help develop their School Travel Plans and as an educational resource. The information is very valuable for us in monitoring travel to and from school and reporting on progress to the Government in our Annual Progress Report.
