Bridges and Footbridges
As Highway Authority we are responsible for maintaining approximately 100 bridges and 20 footbridges (which carry or cross roads). We are also responsible for approximately 50 culverts and 75 retaining walls.
We inspect the condition of our bridges and footbridges annually and other structures are inspected every three years as part of a rolling programme. We also control around 100 other footbridges and minor structures in parks and public open space areas which are also inspected every three years.
Once the inspections are done a maintenance programme is drawn up for the following year.
Some bridges and structures are privately owned, for example by Rail Track or British Waterways.
Private developers may build bridges or structures as part of housing, commercial or industrial developments and where these are to be adopted by the Highway Authority, we make sure that they are designed and built to current standards.
For more information or to report damage to bridges or footbridges, please telephone the Department of Environment and Transport on 01782 232108 or email det@stoke.gov.uk.
