Young Carers

Who is a young carer?Young carers are people under the age of 18, who regularly care for someone else in their family, like a parent, brother or sister. This could be because that person is ill, disabled, dependent on drugs or alcohol, or has mental health problems.

What do young carers do?Young carers may help look after someone by doing different jobs like:

  • shopping, cooking or housework
  • helping them to take their medicine
  • helping them to get washed, dressed or go to the toilet
  • keeping them company and cheering them up.

How can we help?We have got a Young Carers Assessment Worker, who's job it is to give support and advice to any young carer. We can make sure that you and the person you look after are getting all the things you need.

How can you ask for help? If you need our help, please get in touch with us at our Hanley office, or ask someone to do it for you, click here for our contact details.

What happens when you contact us?We will talk to you to find out more about your situation. If we can help, we will arrange to see you either at home or where you suggest- maybe at school. If we can't help you then we will put you in touch with someone else who may be able to.

Who else can help?
North Staffs Carers Association- they can give young carers advice and information and they also run groups where you can meet other young carers.
