Meals on Wheels and Frozen Meal Service

A shepherd's pie

What is this service? We can deliver hot meals or frozen meals to people’s homes, when they are unable to cook or shop for food. For example, this might be because they have a disability or are very frail. Sometimes we provide this service for short periods of time, for example to help people after they have come out of hospital and are recovering.

How does the service work?We can either deliver a hot meal, ready prepared every day or one to two weeks worth of frozen meals for you to heat up and prepare for yourself every day.

Having frozen meals means that you can choose what to eat everyday and when to eat it. We can also provide mini-microwaves and mini-heaters if you need one, so that you can heat the meals up.

If you choose to have hot meals everyday, there is a set menu for that week. However, if you don’t like the menu, we will always try and provide something that you like. We also cater for people with special diets such as reduced fat or reduced salt.

The company we use will deliver meals for lunchtimes only, Monday to Friday. They do not deliver on bank holidays. They usually deliver between 11am and 1pm.

Who can we help?
Adults over 18 who live in Stoke-on-Trent. We have guidelines to help us decide who can use our services, because we can’t help everyone. The Government set these guidelines to make sure that everyone in the country has the same chance of getting help. To read more about these guidelines, click here.

How do you ask for this service?
People are sometimes referred to us by a doctor or a hospital. But you can also phone us yourself and ask for this service.

To contact us please call our free phone number 0800 5610015 where you will be able to speak to a Contact Centre Advisor.

When you phone the contact centre, we will ask you some questions to get some basic information, like your name, address and age. The advisor will carry out an assessment and if you are eligible for the service they will be able to tell you at the end of the phone call.

If you are not eligible the advisor will give you information on other services and organisations that may be able to help.

Is there a charge? There is no charge for the assessments described above but there will be a charge for the meals. At the moment it is £2.10 for a main meal and a pudding. You can pay in advance by cheque or pay when your meal is delivered.
