Burslem Park

Collage of the facilities in Burslem Park including the sports courts, play area and mosaic Lottery logo

Burslem Park is one of the city’s heritage parks and is Grade II listed.  It houses a range of buildings including the park lodge and the pavilion.  It has a rich history and many interesting features have survived the test of time since the park opened in 1894.

Between 2003 and 2007 the Greening for Growth Programme has transformed the parks facilities and, thanks to investment from the lottery, further improvements and the full restoration masterplan of the park is a step closer to reality.  Click here to view the masterplan.

Great News!

Together with a local volunteer group the Burslem Park Partnership we've got £142,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Parks for People’ initiative to develop detailed plans to regenerate Burslem Park.  Committed to providing you with a park we can all be proud of, lots of work has been going on both in the park and behind the scenes to make some major improvements.

We will use the £142,000 to employ a new member of staff in the park and draw up plans to carry out external repairs to the 19th century park’s pavilion and lodge buildings, restore original formal terrace gardens, ornate terracotta, shelters and fountains as well as management of vegetation to open up views through and from the park. Plans will also look at improving park access and encourage greater use of the park by working with the community, schools and volunteers.

We received a project planning grant at the start of 2007 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and have used the money to part fund preparing a Stage 1 application.

We sent our Stage 1 application to the Parks for People programme in March 2008.  After taking six months to make their decision, the Heritage Lottery Fund announced our Stage 1 'pass' approval in October 2008, bringing the Burslem Park Restoration Programme one step closer to reality.  The fantastic news was announced in national and regional press, with Burslem Park being one of only nine parks across the country to receive the development funding in this very competitive round.

What happens now?

Work now starts on developing and detailing the plans, supporting documents and costings included in the masterplan to meet the requirements of the Heritage Lottery Fund at Stage 2.

What is the next step in the process?

We will send a Stage 2 application in September 2009 and, providing that it fulfils the requirements of both funders - the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund, we will get £2m of grant funding to part fund the £3m Burslem Park Restoration Programme.  If successful at Stage 2, a two year restoration programme will be delivered between Autumn 2010 - Autumn 2012, to carry out the £3m improvements detailed in the Masterplan.

Greening for Growth at Burslem Park

Burslem Park has had major improvements over the last few years as part of the Greening for Growth programme.

We have been working with local community group the Burslem Park Partnership to improve the park's facilities.

Greening for Growth improvements include a new childrens' playground, mulit-use sports courts providing skate, tennis and five-a-side facilities, resurfaced paths, improvements to the lake and cascade and installing a fountain in the lake.  Other additions include a bicycle stand, lighting, picnic tables and benches and the Heritage Mosaic.  The community inspired mosaic was designed especially for Burslem Park.  The three metre circular mosaic of tiny tiles shows key buildings in the park and people from the past.
