Allotments

Judging a scarecrow competition at Richmond Street Allotments

We provide allotments for local people to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers. Allotments also provide a special, quiet haven for relaxation. Our allotments are intended primarily for use by the citizens of Stoke-on-Trent. However, people living outside the city boundary can still rent an allotment from us. The only restriction on tenancy is that plot holders must be 18 years of age or older.

Our allotments service looks after 3420 plots on 76 sites across the city. Approximately 75% of plots are occupied at the moment.

Self-Management

Some of our allotment sites are now self-managed. This means that they are leased to Allotment Associations who then set their own rents and take care of their own administration. Other sites remain under our direct management. Most of these sites have Site Secretaries who help out on a voluntary basis. They provide advice and guidance to tenants and contact us with any matters arising on site.

Modern Use

We want our allotments to be used by people from all sections of the community. As well as the traditional growing or fruit, vegetables and flowers, many people now use allotments as gardens with lawns, ponds and patio areas. We have helped a number of community groups to convert overgrown plots into community and wildlife gardens. We also support charity groups, schools and other organisations to use plots for education and training purposes.

Rent

Allotment rents vary according to whether the site is self-managed or council run. Some sites have a waiting list but most will have vacant plots.  We reduce the charges for anyone over sixty.

Allotments provide a wonderful opportunity to grow your own food and flowers, to get fit and to socialise with like-minded people. Many allotment associations run annual produce competitions. If you are interested in renting a plot please contact us to find the closest site to you.
