What the Council Does
We employ over 14,000 people who advise the council, implement the decisions that will shape our future and deliver a diverse range of 600 plus services at 200 sites throughout the city. We influence every area of city life from schools, housing and the environment to transport, economic development and social services. Every person at every level helps to make a real difference to people’s lives in a variety of roles including, Teachers, Builders, Cooks, Cleaners, Engineers, Librarians, School Crossing Patrol Wardens, Social Workers, Planners and Housing Officers.
Embarking upon a journey to excellence, we must provide strong civil leadership, build on civic pride and drive forward a culture of success, a thriving economy, customer care, innovation, staff and customer satisfaction and a common ambition for a great council and a great city. To achieve these objectives, our people work in six directorates that bring together services that complement each other, share the same goals and combine strengths to deliver significant improvements. We’ve a clear direction about where we want to go, so why don’t you join us on our journey and play a key role within one of our directorates?
Our six directorates are:
- Adult Social Care and Health
- Assistant Chief Executive
- Central Services
- Children's Services
- Community Services
- Regeneration
