Maintenance, Outdoor and Trade Vacancies

Not everyone who works at the council works in an office or a building. We employ hundreds of people who enjoy helping to ensure the smooth running of the city and providing a safe and attractive environment for all. They include teams responsible for Building Maintenance, Highways Maintenance, Countryside Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Security, Street Cleaning and School Crossing Patrols.

About these Roles

Building Maintenance - Maintaining civil buildings and 21,000 Council Homes, our team includes Bricklayers, Joiners, Electricians, Plasterers, Gas Service Engineers, Plumbers and Drivers.Grounds Maintenance and Parks Security - Helping to make our area a brighter place, we maintain the city’s many parks and cemeteries as well as tending to housing and other landscaped areas.

Countryside Maintenance - Managing enhancement opportunities for nature conservation and countryside recreation, our work includes carpentry, painting, draining, grass cutting and practical conservation.

Highways Maintenance - Our team of Pavers, Drivers, Road Workers and General Labourers has a variety of responsibilities, including street cleaning, street furniture and road and footpath maintenance.

School Crossing Patrol - We’ve 85 Patrols throughout the city who work on a part-time basis in a highly rewarding role, helping children and parents to safely cross the road before and after school.

Security - Offering a mix of indoor and outdoor work, our team of Caretakers, Security Attendants and CCTV Operators, keep our people and buildings safe and secure.

Street Cleaning – Our responsibilities range from litter picking, graffiti removal and refuse collecting to road sweeping and gritting the roads.
