Affordable Housing

We want to create a city in which everyone has reasonable access to housing. Affordable housing is housing that is available to people who cannot afford to occupy homes generally available on the open market and is an important part of meeting local housing need in the city.

We have set ourselves targets to deliver more affordable housing. Our approach to improving the supply of affordable housing is set out in ‘Opening Doors – Building Affordable Housing in Stoke-on-Trent’ which can be accessed by clicking on the  link at the bottom of the page.

As part of this approach we have ensured that the need for affordable housing is integrated into the planning process. The Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document aims to ensure that, at the planning stage, appropriate provision is made for affordable housing. The Supplementary Planning Document provides detailed guidance on a range of affordable housing issues.

The Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document was approved by the City Council on 27 March 2008  and formally adopted on 30 May 2008. Alongside the Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document the council has produced a guide for applicants intending to develop housing in Stoke-on-Trent. The guide aims to provide an outline of the affordable housing requirements and explain the procedure that the council will follow when an applicant wishes to submit a planning application with an affordable housing requirement.
