Living in Sheltered Housing

Sheltered housing is a group of flats especially designed for people over the age of 55 with support needs. There is a scheme co-ordinator to help you to maintain your independence as long as possible. They are there to support you should you need it, but will respect your privacy and right to confidentiality.

The aim of sheltered housing is to provide a home that is secure, where you can live independently. We aim to offer an environment that welcomes older people and values their contribution within the community and meets their changing needs.

Week days, during office hours a Scheme Coordinator is on site who is in charge of the day to day running of the scheme. The Scheme Coordinator also carries out a daily check of each customer and is able to provide low level support. A pull cord system is in operation throughout the building which links directly to a handset carried at all times by the Scheme Coordinator. When the Scheme Coordinator is off site, the Scheme links to the Central Control or Lifeline Service which is the out of hours emergency service.

Each Scheme has a communal lounge and kitchen where customers are able to socialise. Each Scheme regularly organises its own activities including bingo, coffee mornings and sometimes visits from local singers and bands who visit for an afternoon of entertainment.

Is Sheltered Housing suitable for you?

To live in Sheltered Housing, you must be of retirement age with some need for Sheltered Housing be it housing or socially related. Whilst a Scheme Coordinator is on site during office hours, it is important that you are able to live independently as Sheltered Housing is not a residential care service.
