Paying Your Council Rent

What we would expect from you

The services we provide are paid from the rent you pay.  To maintain these services it is important that payments are made on time.  At the start of your tenancy your local centre will tell you the weekly rent due and arrange the issue of a rent payment card.

The tenancy conditions that you sign and agree to abide by state that you should pay your rent every week, so we would expect you:

  • To pay your rent every week (by Friday of each week)
  • To make payments at other frequencies in advance (for example fortnightly/monthly)  
  • If you miss your payment, we will take prompt action to recover rent arrears.
  • To make up any payments not paid in full by the following week
  • To contact the Rents Helpline on (01782) 236614 immediately if you have difficulties paying your rent
  • Take note of any letters sent to you about rent arrears

They provide help and advice on paying any arrears, advise you on entitlement to welfare benefits and can help you to get specialist debt advice if needed.

Local Centre 
They give advice on entitlement to Housing Benefit and Tax Credits and give you a written assessment of how much you could get.  Please click here for a full list of local centre contact details to make an appointment.

Social Security Offices - Tel : 01782 216600 or 592300
The local Social Security offices can give you information on various Welfare benefits.

Advice 4 Stoke - Tel: 0800 634 8285Advice 4 Stoke is an advice service especially for city council tenants and leaseholders. They provide an independant welfare benefit and debt advice service through local venues near to where you live.

Citizens Advice Bureau - Tel : 01782 408600
They provide independent debt advice.  Visit them at Advice House, Cheapside, Hanley or contact them via the telephone.
