Waste Services

We help improve the image of Stoke-on-Trent by ensuring that streets and communties are kept clean and tidy. We do this by providing a cost effective and efficient collection, recycling and disposal service for the city's domestic and commercial refuse. As a unitary authority, we are responsible for the collection and disposal of the city's waste.

We provide a variety of collection services for the efficient and cost effective removal of refuse from household, commercial and industrial sources. Select from the list of subjects covered in this section.

What we do with your waste

As far as possible, the waste we collect is usefully recycled or re-used. Much of the waste that cannot be put to beneficial use is disposed of by incineration with energy recovery. The remaining waste is sent to landfill.

This is what we did with the 136,672 tonnes of household waste that was collected during 2006/07:

  • 6,147 tonnes was composted
  • 17,970 tonnes was recycled
  • 28,769 tonnes was landfilled
  • 74,771 tonnes was burnt to create electricity for 20,209 homes

6,387 tonnes of soil/rubble was also reused in the construction industry
