Wheeled Bins FAQs
Your questions answered
Q: I am perfectly happy with the bag system - why should I change?
A: A wheeled bin system provides a number of benefits. It offers a secure and hygenic method of collection which ensures that all wastes are properly contained, reducing the amount of spillage and windblown litter.
Health and safety issues are also addressed as employees and the public can sustain injuries from sharp objects placed in plastic sacks. Wheeled bins afford protection to the public and employees alike.
Q: The 180 litre bin seems large for my needs. Do you have smaller bins?
A: If your bin is not full, there is no need to present it for collection each week. It is also possible to have a smaller bin, please contact us for more information.
Q: I have a large family, can I have a larger bin?
A: Yes - but these are only issued to larger families of five or more. Please contact us for information.
Q: Will I be able to move the bin... it seems large?
A: The bin is very light and easy to move even when filled with rubbish.
Q: Do I have to have a wheeled bin - I have steps to go up and down?
A: Yes - the bins will go up and down steps much easier than carrying sacks.
Q: I am disabled or have a medical condition. What do I do?
A: Assisted collections are available in certain circumstances. If there is no one else available to move your bin, please contact us to arrange assistance.
Q: Who is responsible for the wheeled bins?
A: The householder is responsible for the bin, but it remains the property of the council. Householders are advised to take appropriate steps to ensure the upkeep and security of their wheeled bin.
Q: I have excess bags - can I put them along side my bin?
A: Unfortunately not. You can take any additional bags or recyclables to your nearest household waste recycling site. Use the link below to find out the location of your nearest site.
Q: How do I keep my wheeled bin clean?
A: You can continue to store your refuse in plastic sacks within the bin and special wheeled bin sacks are available from most supermarkets. Bins can be cleaned easily using household detergent or disinfectant and a soft sweeping brush.
Q: Can I put garden waste in my wheeled bin?
A: No. All properties with a domestic refuse grey wheelie bin should also have a brown green waste bin for your garden waste. The brown green waste wheelie bin can be used for grass cutting, small twigs etc, but not stones, bricks, concrete and soil. Remember we can only lift bins with the lid CLOSED. Excess must be kept until the following week or you can take any additional bags or recyclables to your nearest household waste recycling site.
Q: Can I put council garden sacks out for collection?
A: No. Under the new system all waste must be contained in your wheeled bin. If you have any unused garden sacks left we can arrange for a refund. Please contact us for more information.
Q: How long will the bin last?
A: With normal use at least 15 years.
Q: What do I do with my old bin?
A: If you would like your old bin to be disposed of, contact us and we will arrange this for you. Alternatively you could convert it into a home composter by cutting off the base, turning it upside down and using the lid as the top. For more information visit our home composting page - use the link below.
Q: What do I do if I have not had a bin delivered?
A: Please let us know and we will arrange for one to be delivered as soon as possible.
