We provide services to help you reduce the amount of waste you produce, recycle more and dispose of your waste.
Facts about your waste
The average household in our city throws away 1.1 tonnes of waste each year. This amounts to around 120,000 tonnes for the whole of Stoke-on-Trent. This is what we did with it in 2005/6
- 55.6 per cent is incinerated to create energy
- 14.9 per cent is recycled or re-used
- 4.2 per cent is composted
- 25.3 per cent is sent to landfill.
Reducing waste
You can take the following steps to reduce the amount of waste you produce:
- avoid buying heavily packaged goods
- use refillable containers
- re-use paper as scrap
- use your own shopping bags or boxes, or use the bag for life scheme at supermarkets
- repair broken goods, rather than replace them
- re-use envelopes
- take unwanted clothes to a charity shop or textile bank
Where to recycle
You can use our household waste and recycling sites at Burslem and Hanford to recycle and dispose of household rubbish.
There are many local recycling sites at car parks and other locations around the city.
